By Bill MerchantTim and Tom spent 23 hours holed up in a fish camp shelter with a roof but no walls. When travel became nearly impossible and extremely dangerous on the river with 50 mph (80km) headwinds and temps down to -35 F Tim and Tom found shelter on the shore at a summer fish camp. Even though there were no walls it was on the downwind side of a point of land and offered a haven from the storm. They waited until the wind died down a bit and they saw a musher go by. Soon after they headed out they came across 4 mushers dug in on the river bivied in their sled bags. Two of the mushers would eventually have to be rescued by snow machine. They both arrived in Kaltag about noon yesterday. Tim Hewitt left around 17:00 headed over the coastal Range to the Bering Sea coast. Tom Jarding suffering from a stomach virus stayed in Kaltag until today at 13:00 when he said he was mostly recovered and ready to try and catch Tim. I hope the weather cooperates and the guys and enjoy one of the most beautiful stretches of the trail. I am still waiting to hear from Marco when he arrives in Kaltag. He made up 24 hours on the leaders during the storm and I look forward to his stories of the Yukon. |
